New SECF website

Today we successfully completed the migration of our website from a roll-your-own approach to a WordPress based solution and a different ISP, which should allow us to develop the SECF in future more easily.

You will notice that the appearance has changed a bit, with a nice picture at the top, dates of our own forthcoming events and recent news items on each page. Other things are:

  • The menu system has changed a bit
  • We’re now consolidating news from many clubs who provide an RSS news feed in the South East on to a single page (https://southeastcroquetfederation.org.uk/1674644977408/local-club-news/)
  • League results submission is a little simpler
  • We’ve added a brief bit about croquet for the sake of completeness and to help newcomers
  • Many minor bits and bobs
  • Oh, you’ll see that in the title bar the pages are labelled southeastcroquetfederation.org.uk. You can use this or just stick with the shorter southeastcroquet.org.uk!

But in general there’s much that hasn’t changed, so you should be familiar with how it all works.

Please note that if you’ve bookmarked any pages that they won’t work anymore – all the URLs have changed (sorry, they were a relic of the original development many years ago).

Croquet Academy: Exiting Covid Lockdown

While unsurprising, it is sad that the recently announced Government roadmap for exiting Covid lockdown, supplemented by CA Taskforce guidance, means that, with the exception of our Zoom-based courses, most of our planned courses will have to be rescheduled.

Clubs will not re-open until the end of March. Even with the lawn facilities open and some more relaxations on 12th April, access to the Clubhouse for all participants is important for almost all our courses due to the prevalence of cold weather and the need for some classroom sessions. As this will not be allowed until 17th May, at the earliest, our May courses will have to be rescheduled.

Planning is now in hand to create a revised coaching programme that is both compatible with the latest Covid control measures and minimises the impact on the playing season, when lawn availability is a critical factor.

As soon as a revised schedule can be announced, it will be published on the Academy, SCCC, CA and SECF websites.

John Greenwood releases Handicap calculator app

It is sometimes difficult to determine the number of extra turns/bisques to be given in Golf or Association Handicap games and also the number of Index points to be exchanged at the end of a level-play game, so John has released the free Croquet Calculator app for iPad/iPhones:

“A calculator to determine who receives bisques/extra turns, and any handicap index changes, for Association and Golf Croquet matches. In particular, it allows the easy calculation of the extra turns received in a doubles Golf Croquet handicap match taking into account all the requirements of Rule 19.3 of The Rules of Golf Croquet 2018.”
