Dulwich wins GC Ladies Day

GC Ladies Day was held at Southwick on Wednesday 9th July.

We were very fortunate with the weather and were pleased to host 14 teams of ladies each with 4-6 players. We were delighted to welcome a new team – Aldershot Traction this year.

Lunch was a DIY picnic with afternoon cakes and tea provided by Sussex County midway through the day, which was very gratefully received.

The day consisted of six matches; four players from each team playing 1 doubles game and 2 singles games simultaneously in each session.

Following the Croquet South East AGM earlier in the year, it was decided that the Advantage handicap system would be used rather than Extra Turns. Timed games made this more time-consuming to score and record, particularly the unfinished games but all was done in accordance with Croquet England guidelines.

There were many close games and indeed the whole competition was not decided until the last round.

The winners were Dulwich with 6 wins; Reigate Priory were second with 5 wins and Rottingdean third with 4 wins.

It was a very busy programme with no respite between games unless a team had brought 6 players along to share the day.

It was good to see so many familiar faces and to welcome some new ones. Indeed, the atmosphere and sociability made for a splendid day. Many thanks to all who helped – Bob Clark who was referee of the tournament, (and whose spreadsheets we relied upon) and Jo Crosby and Nira Scutt who worked so hard keeping the scores up to date.
