Sydenham wins GC Ladies Day
GC Ladies Day was held at Southwick on 10th July and managed by Robyn Clark and Linda Gavigan.
We were very fortunate with the weather and were pleased to welcome 14 teams of ladies with teams of 4-6 players.
Lunch was a bring your own picnic but a fancy cream tea was provided by the club midway through the afternoon and was very gratefully received.
The day consisted of six matches; four players from each team playing 1 doubles game and 2 singles games simultaneously in each session.
Timed handicap games made the choice of using Extra Turns over Advantage an easier solution for the scorers but it was discovered that some newer players had only ever played using the Advantage system so found Extra Turns confusing.
There were many close games and indeed the whole competition was not decided until the last round.
The winners were Sydenham with 5 wins and 1 draw from Hove Beach with just 5 wins and Cheam with 4 wins, Reigate Priory were 4th, Surbiton 5th and Rottingdean 6th.
It was a pretty hectic programme with no respite between games unless a team had brought 6 players along to share the day. Comments on the pace have been noted and the format may be tweaked next year to provide a slightly more manageable structure.
It was encouraging to see so many familiar faces and to welcome some new ones. Indeed, the atmosphere and congeniality made for a marvellous day. Many thanks to all who helped –Bill Arliss whose spreadsheet kept us on the straight and narrow and Bob Clark who was referee of the tournament, and of course Jonathan Isaacs and Roger Sutton who made the sumptuous tea.
